4-door Chevy El Camino celebrates 100 years

Chevy El Camino: Over the years, there have been many layers of wonder and mystery added to the top of the American coupe utility segment. Unfortunately, history is not as old as some would have us believe.

Of course, in the United States and Australia, the concept of two-door passenger cars with a bed in the rear had been around since the 1920s and 1930s respectively. And they soon proved successful enough for automakers to carve out an entirely new niche just for themselves.

In the United States, Ford was the first to take advantage of the quirky small segment. This was in 1957, with the Ranchero nameplate of a utility coupe based on an automotive platform. Then it was GM's turn to respond, releasing the legendary El Camino just two years later. So how is anyone wishing “Happy 100th Anniversary to the Chevrolet El Camino!” and “A toast to an entire century of enduring popularity!” This is a little weird, right?

Well, not necessarily, if you're even a little familiar with the wonderfully imaginative world of virtual automotive artists in general and the master pixel artist better known as automotive.ai on social media in particular. He is very skilled at cooking up quirky or wonderful CGI mashups, like the time there was a GM-Nissan digital alliance.

But the CGI expert sometimes plays with other things as well, like his winter preparations for a snowplow and trail that gave us examples of extreme creativity. This is like the 'off-road' Dodge Challenger and the 'ZR2' four-door Chevy Camaro. Speaking of Chevys and four doors, let's go back, then, to the digital Chevy El Camino series that supposedly spans a century of popularity rather than the real-world 63 years!

Thus, the CGI story moves forward in time from the 1920s to the virtual contemporary moment when Chevrolet still makes the El Camino in its factories. So far, it's digitally evolved into a rather odd Chevy Camaro sibling, showcasing two- and four-door flavors along with different sized bed trays!
