Renault R5 Turbo 3E: Meet the modern EV

Renault R5 Turbo 3E: Next to the Renault 4Ever, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is the other star of the Paris Motor Show 2022, at the Renault stand. We managed to get the beast up close.

Le Losange continues to lay the groundwork for the Renault 5's return in 2024. A long-awaited 100% electric return that the company began distilling in early 2021 through the Renault 5 Prototype concept car, then through the Renault 5 Diamant Retrofit Study last summer. At Mondial, it's a showcar from the same barrel that is on display at the Porte de Versailles, celebrating the R5 Turbo of the 80s, in a slightly crazy reinterpretation.

Already impressive in its original configuration, the Losange's bombinette transforms into a true dragster. It's able to line up with the Pike's Peak event given its impressive rear wing, while its eccentric decor is very much from the video game world.

The set is based on an original R5 Turbo cell around which all bodywork elements have been revised, modernized and above all the bodywork. Not forgetting to make extensive use of LED luminous decorative elements, or even fluorescent colors.

To entertain the gallery, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E also has the 280 kW (380 hp) of its electric motor distributed entirely on the rear wheels. Nothing could be more normal as its main raison d'être lies in making donuts.

Understand the 360° figures also called drifts. This is due to a steering angle greater than 50°, in which case 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched in 3.9 s. In a straight line, when it's time to get it right, the urban car improves this performance by about 4 tenths of a second.

An impetuous temperament for this Renault that, unfortunately, will never be used in series, having abandoned all sporting ambitions. But all is not lost, as Alpine will take the lead by launching, in 2024, an explosive city car based on the future R5.
