The IPVA (Tax on Property of Motor Vehicles), is a type of state tax that must be paid every year by those who have a motorcycle and car, for example. The value of the IPVA can be paid in two ways: in installments and in a single installment.

Created in 1985, the IPVA came to replace the TRU (Single Road Tax), where the amount collected is distributed to the states and municipalities to which the vehicle is registered. Since public bodies can use this value as they wish.

It is important to remember that there are states that do not charge the IPVA, this according to the number of years the car has been manufactured and according to each state, but Minas Gerais and Roraima do not grant the exemption.

paying with discount

Yes, it is possible to get a discount when paying your IPVA, but it is important to be aware that most discounts are only offered during the month of January. So, if you live in Bahia, know that this year they gave a 20% discount.

But, in general, most Brazilian states offer a discount for those who pay the installments in a single way. Therefore, to get a better discount it is recommended to pay during the month of January.

When should I pay?

In general, IPVA is available to be paid in January of every year, but there are states where the invoice is available in December. For this, you need to consult the SeFaz (Secretary of Finance) website.

To pay the IPVA, you have two options: pay in installments using your credit card, bank slip or pay in cash.

Therefore, the most recommended way is to pay in a single installment, as you can receive a discount of up to 9% on the final amount, but it is possible to pay in up to 12 installments on your credit card, remembering that your card brand may be charged a fee.
