Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale revives: See unique model

Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale revives: Italian craftsmen at MAT have recreated and slightly modernized the Alfa Romeo Stradale, an iconic sports car from the 1960s, at the behest of a collector.

The name Maniffatura Automobili Torino, or MAT, may not mean anything to you, but this Italian company founded in 2014 today makes some of the most unique supercars on the planet. It is engineer Paolo Garella, who worked for more than 20 years at the Pininfarina studio until he was responsible for special projects, who is at the origin and at the forefront.

MAT is working on production of the Apollo IE, New Stratos, Glickenhaus SCG003S and Aspark Owl on behalf of their respective brands. The Turin-based company today inaugurates a new family of vehicles called the Jewel, or “jewel” in English.

They will be subtly modernized recreations of legendary models, made to order, with each example highly personalized to its buyer's wishes. The first car in this range was made for a German collector. It therefore brought back to life the mythical Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale of the late 1960s.

A road-going derivative of a racing car, only 18 of this coupe saw production. It is often listed among the most beautiful automobiles in history. Launched shortly after the Lamborghini Miura, it carried its (more modest) engine in the center-rear position and had, well before becoming standard in supercars, doors that opened on the elytron.

Rest assured, no vintage Stradale 33 has been altered. The one from MAT is not a restomod. Its technical basis is specific, but it was developed according to Alfa Romeo's original design documents. Very true to its design inspiration, the car incorporates some additional comfort equipment, such as air conditioning, but remains ultra-light. Its designers advertise a weight between 850 and 950 kg.

The original Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale was powered by a 230hp 2.0L V8; the newcomer has a 2.6 L V8 of around 240 hp from an Alfa Romeo Montreal. Transmission is to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

After a long gestation, the creation of the car required almost a year of manual work. MAT does not rule out producing one or two more copies with different configurations if there is interest from customers, with a sale price between 1.3 and 1.5 million euros.
