PEUGEOT E-208: The Chemistry of the New Lion

The lion firm never ceases to amaze us. While its electric city car, the Peugeot e-208, monopolizes the top European sales of electric cars, the brand reveals a very important chemical and technical evolution of its e-208.

For the 2023 vintage, Peugeot will offer us a new Peugeot e-208. If you need to be an expert to see the difference between the old and new work of the electric city car with the lion, the fact is that it completely changes from a technical point of view.

In fact, the e-208's electric propulsion system is entirely new. Engineers dropped the 136 horsepower engine and lithium-ion battery.

This 2023 vintage Peugeot e-208 takes advantage of the technical advances and investments made by the STELLANTIS group to offer an entirely new battery. This changes traditional lithium-ion chemistry to batteries consisting of 80% nickel, 10% manganese, and 10% cobalt.

The set operates at 400 volts and generates an energy capacity of 51 useful kWh, or 48.1 useful kWh. Engineers also overhauled the engine. It is much less greedy on electrons while offering more power.

It now accumulates 156 horsepower for 260 Nm of torque. So, with this battery change, the new electric motor and a lot of efficiency work, Peugeot announces an average energy consumption of just 12 kWh.

A number that pales all electric cars of the moment, unable to go below 15 kWh per 100 km on average. In fact, and despite a “small” battery, this new Peugeot e-208 increases its autonomy to more than 400 km in the WLTP cycle.

On the other hand, to recharge the city car, Peugeot maintains its current performance that revolves around two types. The built-in AC charger is 7.4 kW. As an option, a three-phase charger with a power of 11 kW can allow faster charging at public terminals.

This Peugeot e-208 obviously supports fast charging. Here, the city car can collect a power of 100 kW. Thus, it is possible to go from 20% to 80% in less than 25 min.
