Porsche Taycan: The multimedia system under the magnifying glass

Porsche Taycan revolutionizes: main communication interface between the driver and his car, source of entertainment for all passengers, almost essential element in the list of on-board equipment, part sometimes hidden but more often highlighted in the design of the dashboard, the multimedia system and its central display has established itself as a centerpiece of today's passenger compartments.

The Porsche Taycan is an electric 100% four-door sports coupe that incorporates a specific version of the brand's multimedia system, “Porsche Communication Management” (PCM). It differs from the versions installed on the other models in the line by the absence of physical buttons, replaced by a second 8.4-inch vertical touchscreen completing the more classic 10.9-inch horizontal main screen just above.

You can now connect your phone to Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay wirelessly. There is also 16.8-inch digital 100% instrumentation, very elongated, taking the shape of the frame of traditional round counters arranged in a pyramid. And then, as an option for €1,032, the front passenger can enjoy a screen identical to the one in the center, in its extension, of 10.9 inches.

In its most complete version, there are no less than four screens across the entire panel. And yet the presentation looks almost identical to what it always was in Porsche. A wide horizontal strip integrates the two main screens (the central one and the one reserved for the passenger). An inclined plane then connects to the center console that supports the vertical display.

All actions go through these screens. The treatment is thus relatively refined when all the tiles are off and the atmosphere becomes very technological when they light up, dressing the entire panel with various data and graphics. All this in a familiar and classic furniture structure.

The lidless instrument panel, in curved, glare-treated glass, features three round counters, all customizable. It is possible to replicate the navigation map between the two side counters or display it in full screen. To modify the information on this screen, everything is done on the steering wheel, in the right branch.

A button is used to select the zone to be configured and a wheel is used to choose the desired menu and then validate it. A third back button completes these two controls.

Finally, the instrumentation ends have sensitive keys. On the left for lighting control (position lights, dipped beam, automatic mode, rear fog light) and on the right for some dynamic functions (ESP deactivation, air suspension adjustment, body height elevation, configurable function e.g. assigned to the activation of the artificial sound of the engine in the passenger compartment).
